Yorkshire Shield

The first Yorkshire Shield competition was held in 1905-06, although games had been played between different associations from 1903-04. Initially the Yorkshire Shield was a knock-out competition; from 1947-48 it was played as a league competition.

As with the Yorkshire Cup, the only competition for the Yorkshire Shield was at senior level (which was ultimately Under 16), until intermediate (Under 13) and junior (Under 11) competitions were introduced in 1973-74 and 1975-76 respectively. When the English Schools' Under 16 Premiership was introduced in 1996-97, the senior competition at county level reverted to Under 15, before the schools' representative programme was ended in 2001.
