Leeds & Hunslet Schools' Rugby League
Yorkshire Cup
The first Yorkshire Cup competition was held in 1903-04, which suggests that there were other towns and cities, as well as Leeds, where organised schools' rugby was being played.

The competition was held at senior level only until 1973-74, when both Under 16 and Under 15 competitions took place. The competition was extended to Under 14 in 1983-84 and to the rest of high school ages in 1986-87. An Under 11 competition also ran from 1986-87 until 1997-98. When the Rugby Football League took over the champion schools competition in 2002-03, girls competitions were introduced, from the following year, on an annual rolling programme, starting with Year 7 (Under 12).

Yorkshire Champion Schools from 2002
Since 2002-03 the Yorkshire Champion Schools Tournament has come under the organisational and financial umbrella of the Rugby Football League. Local tournaments feed through county tournaments to the national tournament. Staging the finals at central venues, with the national Year 7 boys' final played as a curtain-raiser to the Challenge Cup Final has raised the profile of the competition. During its first year the re-branded tournament featured boys' teams from Year 7 (Under 12) to Year 11 (Under 16). From 2002-04 a girls' tournament was introduced, initially at Year 7, with other age-groups added each year on a rolling programme, to mirror the boys' tournament.
