Challenge Cup Final Curtain-Raisers

The Under 11 Challenge Cup Final Curtain-Raiser was launched in May 1975, when Widnes and Wigan met prior to the Warrington v Widnes decider at Wembley Stadium. The first-ever curtain-raiser featured two Lancashire sides, as Yorkshire did not launch their Under 11 League until the following season, when two Yorkshire sides (Hull and Leeds) played at Wembley.

Initially the relevant counties' top teams were selected to play, but, after three years, it was decided that all associations should be given the opportunity to experience such a prestigious event. The match itself was an exhibition game rather than a competitive one. From 1976 different associations were offered the chance to provide ball boys, from their Under 13 squads. Referees were nominated by associations and appointed by English Schools' Rugby League.

From 2003 the Challenge Cup Final Curtain-Raiser featured the Under 12 Champion Schools Final. The last referee to be appointed by ESRL (for the 2003 final) was Leeds & Hunslet's Alun Davies.

National Under 13 "Sevens"

From 1972 to 1983 ESRL ran an end-of-season Under 13 seven-a-side tournament. The competition was won by a different school each year and by nine different associations.

A national Under 16 seven-a-side tournament was held in 1974-75. Hunslet beat Leigh in the final, 8-5.
