Champion Schools

In 1974 an Under 16 challenge match was arranged, when the Lancashire Champions St John Fisher (Wigan) beat Yorkshire Champions Cross Green (Leeds) in a curtain-raiser to the Championship Final. However it was not until 1980-81 that the first Champion Schools knock-out competition was organised; Wigan's St John Fisher being victorious again, this time against Parkside (Hunslet).
From 1983-84 the competition was extended to include lower age-groups from Under 15 down to Under 11. The Under 11 competition was subsequently curtailed from 1998.

With input from ESRL Fixture Secretary Ron England, working initially alongside Rugby League National  Development Manager Andy Harland, the Rugby Football League took over the organisation of the Champion Schools Tournament from 2002-03, with the Under 12 Final being played as a curtain-raiser to the Challenge Cup Final (at Cardiff that year). A girls' competition was started at Under 12 in 2003-04, with older age-groups introduced on an annual rolling programme, to mirror the boys' tournament.
